This Working Group exists to facilitate the sharing of roads data between regional planning organizations, local governments, state agencies, and the public. This valuable data set requires substantial production efforts by city and county GIS departments, NC Department of Transportation and others. The Working Group’s goal is to put together a roads framework and facilitate maintenance of the data through agreements among state and local agencies. Its objectives are to identify incentives for local governments, use the NC OneMap GIS data inventory tool, collaborate with NC OneMap for data distribution, and establish an Internet service for all roads data.
NCStreetMap, released in spring 2008, achieves the objective of an Internet service for roads data. This data exchange between local, state and federal agencies uses a tool to upload street centerline data via shape files, zip files, or geodatabases. This tool will save time for all agencies that use roads data.
The “Geographic
Data Content Standard for Transportation Roads Data” adopted in 2005 is being revised with attribute fields to support geocoding or address matching applications that allow for routing of vehicles. Because of variations at state and local levels, there is a need for a common schema for street centerlines across North Carolina that includes road-line connectivity. The WGRT has cross-matched attributes from local government and state agencies to create a core list of attribute fields. See the draft

The WGRT continues to work on the standard and a “best practices” document to guide local governments (e.g. how to visually represent different types of roads). The WGRT committee includes more than a dozen local government representatives.
The Federal Geographic Data Committee funded a
proposal submitted by the WGRT to develop an open source desktop data transformation tool to assist local data stewards with converting their data into common formats. The WGRT has initiated work on the proposal’s scope of work.
